I was just thinking that today, September 11, 2011, the tenth anniversary of the worst terrorist attacks to happen on American soil, many Americans and sympathizers around the world will pause to reflect, pray, share sorrows.
Well, the question is what have we Americans been doing since the terrorist devastation? My observations sadly affirm that far too many of us are still hating, still murdering, still lying, still cheating, still judging our neighbor and still shaking a righteous fist at almighty God. Truth demands we accept the fact that community and national life here in America after 9/11/2001, looks a lot like it did before before the event. Evil is just as present; Satan is still the prince of this world. We are well aware that even in these following years man’s inhumanity to man continues; we continue to treat each other badly; we are still victims of racism, sexism, jealousy, envy, hatred, malice, oppression, and all kinds of abuse.
Every now and then, God will come and shake the earth, upset our security, disturb our comfortable world, and man will still act contemptible. It is clear then, that even when God allows our nation to experience devastation, it does not mean that man will change, that man will confess his own sins and arise and return to Him. Just because God touches our bodies, our lives, our homes or our nation, does not mean that man will “come to himself.” So on occasion, God will allow terror to strike at our heels. The terrors are not only to rattle us and wake us up from our slumber, but they are also reminders that Christ is now preparing for His second coming and we need to ready ourselves for it.
Remember when King Herod and all Jerusalem were terrified because of the Terror being born in a humble manger in Bethlehem? What is it about the coming of the Lord that terrifies us? As long as He does not come, we can pretend that we are in charge of our lives and everything in it. But when God comes, He comes as a holy Terror. He makes us examine the perverseness of our lives. He makes us turn the light on ourselves. When God comes, He calls us into account which is terrifying to sinning souls.
Yes, September 11, 2001 was indeed a tragedy but no description of what occurred on that day compares to what man is to soon experience. Man has not experienced terror like the holy Terror that’s coming. Get ready for the Lion of Judah!
Merciful Father and Ruler of all the earth, forgive us for our complacency and indifference to Your mighty acts. So often, after the initial shock has melted away, we return to our same sinful ways. Please help us, O God, for beside You there is no other. Fix us according to Your will and lead us according to Your desire. Grant that we not be found lacking when Your Son returns and we are weighed in the balances; through Him who lives and reign with You, Jesus Christ, our salvation. Amen.
