Disturbances About the Way

Posted on October 10, 2012 at 10:45 AM

About that time there arose a great disturbance about the Way. Acts 19:23.

There were charges made against the Gospel of Jesus Christ that accused it of being the source of confusion and disorder. You probably remember that the same accusation was made against Paul and Silas where they preached the gospel in Thessalonica and disturbance and disorder resulted. And so we read: “These men who have caused trouble all over the world have now come here.”

Well, there is one thing certain about the Gospel. It does not make waves. It does not attempt to pacify or satisfy man. The Gospel is a two edged sword of truth that cuts to the soul of man. The Gospel is not interested in how people feel about it for it is the power of God through Jesus Christ to all who believe. Wherever the Gospel arrives in power to any city, to any soul, to any circumstance, it works its disturbing function.

Even though through Paul and Silas (and others) the world was turned upside down in an effort to put it right side up, commotion and opposition was prevalent in many areas where Jesus’ followers traveled. Yes, the Gospel creates disturbance. Wherever it is preached in the power of the Holy Spirit there has and always will be disturbance about “the Way.”

You see, the Gospel is a peculiar system. It is that “Way.” It is a peculiar way of thinking and a peculiar way of behaving and a peculiar way of feeling, for it has to do with faith, hope and love. Children of God are peculiar because we are commanded by our Lord to try and reach out and compel people to turn around, to change directions, to move from immorality to morality, from hate and malice to love and peace, from idol worship to worship of the true God.

As soon as Paul and Silas began to spread the Good News of salvation, hope and comfort to sinners, it occasioned a universal commotion; “there arose a great disturbance about the Way.” Matthew tells us that Christ foretold this very thing: “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.” Matthew 10:34. The evil of sin will continue to exist and the Gospel of Jesus Christ will continue to create disturbances.

Our Lord and Savior Christ came to give us inner tranquility with God, peace in our souls, peace with our brothers and sisters; but in the world we will always encounter disturbances about “the Way” until His coming again in glory.

Come, Lord Jesus, Come.
